I initially started this Winget / Wingate Genealogy site to grow my own family tree. As I delved further into the past and traversed side branches, I started receiving emails from people volunteering information on their own branches. It didn't take long before I realized just how many undiscovered cousins we have! Winget / Wingate Genealogy now has open enrollment for anyone who link to any of the thousands of individuals currently in the system or who is related to the Winget or Wingate families (or any of the more than 90 known variants). Our site offers three integrated sections for the ultimate experience.

Collaborative Genealogy Software

To facilitate collaboration, I chose PhpGedView. PhpGedView (PGV) is a web-web genealogy application which has full editing capabilities, full privacy controls, and the ability to associate files (such as photos) to individuals and families. PGV's filter allows you to enter your data confidently, knowing that information on living individuals will only be available to other members. Another benefit is that any changes you make are viewable to others immediately.

Forums

As good as PGV is on its own, I was still getting inquiries via email. We needed a place where we could post questions for all to see and answer. There are several good forum packages out there - some free, others commercial. After comparing these products (and trying to write my own forum software), I decided on MyBB. I replaced the parsing engine with one of my own which supports WS Code - an easy to learn mark-up language similar to BB Code used by most other forums.

Wiki

The newest addition to this site is this wiki. Like the world's largest wiki (Wikipedia), so, too, does our wiki use MediaWiki. Our wiki will serve as a place to bring our ancestors' stories to life. Most genealogical software focuses on dry facts and events. This may be sufficient for others, but I don't want these fascinating people reduced to a series of dates and places. I want to read how our forefathers influenced and shaped their world (and ours!).

Edits are limited to registered members. I ask that you not post information about the living (except yourself) on the wiki until I find a way to hide it from visitors.
